Canine Ear Infections: What to Look for and How to Treat It
Dogs can get ear infections just as easily as people and the worse part is that they are very painful. If you’re not sure if your dog has an ear infection, ask yourself these questions:
- Does the ear in question have a strong odor?
- Is there any kind of yellowish discharge coming from the dog’s ear?
- Is your dog rubbing his ear excessively?
- Is your dog shaking his head excessively?
- Does your dog pull away anytime you touch his ear(s)?
If you answered yes to a number of these questions, your dog may be showing symptoms of an ear infection. Take your dog to the veterinarian immediately. The vet will be able to diagnose your dog with an ear infection and be able to tell you what kind of infection he has, bacterial or yeast.
Once your dog has been officially diagnosed you need to choose an over the counter canine ear wash. Most ear washes are easy to use. You first pour a small amount of the solution onto the dog’s ears and then massage the infected area with your hands. Be sure to be gentle as your dog may be in pain. You can dry up any excess solution with cotton balls. Be sure to read all instructions on the ear wash bottle, as each over the counter solution may be a little different. After using the ear wash, you can place a touch of olive oil on your dog’s ears to sooth them and help with the pain.
To help prevent canine ear infections be sure to use an ear wash once or twice a week. This is especially good advice for dogs that swim or have a history of ear problems. It is also a good idea to wash out your dog’s ears after bathing. In addition, plucking out hair that grows in you dog’s ear canal will help to keep the canal dry. You can use common household tweezers.
All these extra doggie chores may seem like a lot of work but your dog will be happy, healthy, and it may save you some unnecessary trips to the vet.
